    MAZDA ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

    CONVERSION KIT

    1. 1974-1977 Mazda REPU Rotary Truck (LHD)

The Mazda Rotary Engine Pickup, or REPU, was a unique offering from Mazda in the mid-1970s, being the only rotary-powered pickup truck ever produced. This left-hand drive truck combined the smooth and rev-happy nature of the Wankel rotary engine with the utility of a pickup bed. However, like many vehicles of its era, the steering in the REPU would have likely been manual or a rudimentary hydraulic system, potentially requiring significant effort, especially at low speeds. An Electric Power Steering (EPS) upgrade would dramatically transform the driving experience. Imagine effortless maneuvering in parking lots and city streets, a stark contrast to the potentially heavy steering of the original system. Beyond reduced effort, a modern EPS system can offer improved steering precision and responsiveness, making this classic truck more enjoyable and less tiring to drive in modern traffic conditions.

    2. 1979-1985 Mazda RX-7 SA / FB Chassis (LHD)

The first generation Mazda RX-7, known as the SA or FB chassis, is a celebrated sports car that launched the RX-7 legend. This left-hand drive model, produced from 1979 to 1985, was renowned for its lightweight design, balanced handling, and exhilarating rotary engine. While the RX-7 SA/ FB offered a pure driving experience, its steering, particularly in non-power steering models, could be heavy at lower speeds. Upgrading to Electric Power Steering (EPS) would significantly enhance the usability of this classic sports car. EPS would reduce steering effort during parking and low-speed maneuvers, making it more user-friendly in everyday driving. Furthermore, a modern EPS system can be tuned to provide a more responsive and precise steering feel, potentially improving upon the original hydraulic system’s feedback and contributing to a more confident and enjoyable driving experience, whether on twisty roads or in urban environments.

    3. 1986-1991 Mazda RX-7 FC Chassis (LHD)

The second generation Mazda RX-7, the FC chassis, built upon the success of its predecessor, offering a more refined and sophisticated sports car experience. This left-hand drive model, produced from 1986 to 1991, retained the rotary engine and rear-wheel-drive layout but featured a more advanced suspension and, in later models, turbocharging. While power steering was more commonly available in the FC generation, an Electric Power Steering (EPS) upgrade still offers compelling benefits. Modern EPS systems are generally lighter and more efficient than the hydraulic systems of the FC era, potentially improving fuel economy and reducing parasitic drag. An EPS upgrade can also provide a more precise and customizable steering feel, allowing for lighter effort at low speeds and a more direct connection to the road at higher speeds. This modernization enhances the driving experience, making the FC RX-7 even more enjoyable and responsive while also eliminating potential maintenance issues associated with aging hydraulic systems.

    4. 1992-2002 Mazda RX-7 FD Chassis (RHD)

The third generation Mazda RX-7, the FD chassis, is widely considered an icon of Japanese sports car design. This right-hand drive model, built from 1992 to 2002, is famed for its stunning looks, potent twin-turbo rotary engine, and exceptional handling. While the FD RX-7 already came equipped with hydraulic power steering, an Electric Power Steering (EPS) upgrade can still offer advantages. Modern EPS systems can be more compact and lighter, which is particularly beneficial in a performance-focused car like the FD where weight reduction is key. An advanced EPS system can also provide even more precise steering feel and responsiveness, potentially surpassing the original hydraulic system, especially as these systems age and components wear. Furthermore, the elimination of hydraulic fluid leaks and pump maintenance contributes to a more reliable and modern ownership experience for this revered sports car.

    5. 1993-1995 Mazda RX-7 FD Chassis (LHD)

The third generation Mazda RX-7, the FD chassis, is a legendary sports car known for its breathtaking performance and iconic design. This left-hand drive model, specifically produced for the North American market from 1993 to 1995, shares all the performance and handling prowess of its right-hand drive counterpart. Although the FD RX-7 was factory-equipped with hydraulic power steering, upgrading to Electric Power Steering (EPS) can still bring notable improvements. A modern EPS system can be lighter and more compact, contributing to weight savings and potentially improving the car’s already nimble handling. Moreover, EPS offers the potential for a more refined and responsive steering feel, potentially enhancing driver feedback and precision compared to the original hydraulic system, particularly as the original components age. An EPS upgrade also eliminates the maintenance and potential failures associated with hydraulic power steering components, offering a more reliable and modern driving experience for this classic performance machine.

    6. 2006-2014 Mazda RX8 (LHD)

The Mazda RX-8, a successor to the RX-7, continued Mazda’s rotary engine legacy in a more modern and practical four-door coupe. This left-hand drive model, produced from 2006 to 2014, is characterized by its unique styling, balanced chassis, and high-revving RENESIS rotary engine. Crucially, the RX-8 was originally equipped with Electric Power Steering (EPS) from the factory. While it already benefits from EPS technology, there might still be advantages to considering an aftermarket EPS upgrade. Advanced aftermarket systems could potentially offer enhanced features and tunability beyond the original factory setup. This could include adjustable steering assist levels to tailor the feel to driver preference or driving conditions, or even more precise and responsive steering control for enhanced handling. An upgrade in this case would be about refining and customizing the existing EPS system to potentially achieve a more personalized or performance-oriented driving experience.
